Hallux Rigidus

Hallux rigidus

Hallux Rigidus is the osteoarthritis of the joint at the base of the big toe. This is a wear of the joint, characterized by a progressive disappearance of the articular cartilage. This causes pain and stiffness of varying degrees.

There is typically pain in the natural way of walking (more barefoot), which decreases when sitting or lying down. It occurs most often, in the second half of life, and affects both men and women.

At the initial stage, the treatment of Hallux Rigidus is gladly medical and podological (ortopaedic soles wearing). At a more advanced stage, the surgical treatment that oscillates between conservative surgery (respect of the joint) or radical (definitive blocking of the joint called arthrodesis) is discussed.
